Roleplayers of Color

FAQ
If you are a person of color who roleplays on any platform (MMORPG, Journaling, Message Boards, Twitter, Chat Rooms, Tabletop, anything) or maybe you’re a white person who plays a character of color and wants to make sure it’s not coming off as racist or maybe you’re a white person who just wants to learn more about ethnicity and race in roleplaying: basically if you want to examine/discuss racial and ethnic issues in your hobby, you belong here.

doublefangs: I guess I had just hoped they'd be "nice" since the RP's been in action a while and I just recently was asked to participate (rare thing, I guess?). The mods have "stated" that they're fine with COC, but I'm having my doubts a bit, too. You're right - I should call them out. I'll do that in the next group chat we have and see how bullshit the answer is. Also, thanks for posting my question. My two characters are both American: a cis Black straight guy and a cis bisexual (cont'd)

Filippina-Chinese girl. My characters haven’t been in the RPG yet since I wanted their profiles checked - I realize now that I’ve been too lenient on the writers and have only been side-eyeing/suspicious. Anyone who would be willing to check my characters/call bullshit on anything can go to my ASK box or private message me & I’ll link them. Thank you so much.

doublefangs: I'm a white RPer who was invited to a nice group RPG. However, all the characters in it are white except for half of mine (I have 4). I plan on writing more POC original chars b/c it skeeves me out that the RPG's NYC is all white & supermodel thin - so this place helps me not fuck things up too badly with my POCs. I was wondering if any of the mods or followers would be willing to read my character profiles for my POC? I would be super grateful and welcome critque! Thank you for making this blog

Is this RP based on the TV Show Girls?

We kid, sorry.

I can’t speak for the other mod but honestly, if I see a RPG that is all white, I won’t participate. It shows me right away how the mods feel about race and generally, in my experience, if they do allow in COC, they are reduced to stereotypes. I know you called them a “nice group” but I have to wonder how nice they really are (my opinion of course!)

If I was you, I would flat out ask the mods why everyone is white and thin. (But I do like to call people out on that stuff!)

As to looking over your profile, I’m publishing this and anyone willing to help can contact you. If you want to send us a follow-up and let us know what race these characters are, or you can submit the profiles and let the community read/comment. Whatever you feel comfortable with.

I know that character creation is a deeply personal thing and opening it up to critique from strangers can be a scary but I think ultimately very important step.

“I usually like playing romance with a main fantasy storyline. I don’t like IC things like roleplaying a certain character. I just like making my own and seeing how they interact with other people’s characters.”

Also looking for play by post or forum type RP with either players of color or characters of color prominent.

Do you know any places to RP that fit this description?

We want your content!

Hi everyone!

We’re so excited to have so many members follow in such a short amount of time. It really makes us smile that there are so many interested people here.

Of course, the whole point of this space is that we want content from you. Do you have a profile or website for your character? Do you have a blog post about being a roleplayer of color or portraying a character of color? Do you just want to introduce yourself and tell us where you play and what you play? We want it all!

Our submit box is open and waiting for you! Thank you so much for joining us on this project!

We’re discussing interactive content as well such as a question of the week sort of thing. If you have ideas, please let us know!

(Also, we can’t follow back on this blog but we will follow back everyone on our Twitter!)

Who should be following/participating in this project?
Um…everyone? Seriously. If you are a person of color who roleplays on any platform (MMORPG, Journaling, Message Boards, Twitter, Chat Rooms, Tabletop, anything) or maybe you’re a white person who plays a character of color and wants to make sure it’s not coming off as racist or maybe you’re a white person who just wants to learn more about ethnicity and race in roleplaying. Basically if you want to examine/discuss racial and ethnic issues in your hobby, you belong here.
What is the goal of this project?
We have a few goals that are subject to change and transformation. The first is we want to provide a space for people who play characters of color to show off their characters. So please submit profiles or links or anything so we can celebrate your character. Second, this is to serve as a community for roleplayers of color to have a safe space, not to only find other people of color who game but also, as a minority within a minority, to have a place where they are in charge. Third, we want to serve as kind of a Want Ads hub so that games that want characters of color or gamers of color can have one central location to target advertise roles. Lastly, this project will serve a social justice role in calling out those racist roleplayers and sites (for example: whitewashing). Many players see racist portrayals or storylines but don’t feel comfortable saying anything. That is what we are here for.
How do I participate?
It depends on the kind of person you are. You can follow us here on Tumblr or on Twitter. You can like posts, reblog, retweet and favorite. You can signal boost and tell your followers about us. If you are more active, then submit your character profile to be shown off. Drop us an ask. Or if you really are mad as hell and not going to take it anymore, submit an example of racist roleplay.
Why didn’t you publish my ask/submission?
It could be a number of things. First, we didn’t get it. Tumblr is notorious for losing things so please, wait 24 hours and then redo it. Second, it was anon hate. We won’t be giving power to the types of racist close-minded individuals who have nothing better to do than troll spaces like this. Those get deleted upon sight. Third, it was a profile that had issues. We take an intersectional approach here and as such we won’t publish profiles that are homophobic, racist, sexist, cissexist, ableist, etc unless it is part of the character’s characterization. For instance, there is a difference between a bad guy who hates women and a profile that is littered with sexist language.
Will you follow me back?
We wish that we could but this is a sideblog off our main blogs and therefore, we can’t follow you. However, if you have a roleplaying Tumblr that is either run by a roleplayer of color or is a character of color, submit to us and we will promote you!
I want to submit a story but I want to stay anonymous. How can I do that?
We have the settings so that author photos are not published with posts. Feel free to submit and leave us a note in the title that you don’t want your username attached. We will edit the request out before we publish. If that isn’t anonymous for you, feel free to send asks and we will copy/paste them into one post. If you don’t tell us on your submission, we will add “by username” to the end of your title as well as tag the post with your username.
We reserve the right to edit, in any way, shape, or form this FAQ at any time.
